Hertfordshire Woodcarvers

Hertfordshire Woodcarvers
We were set up decades ago, and the group has been led by Stan Kimm for 45 years. We began our existence as the ‘Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Middlesex Woodcarvers’, based in a hall near the old bus station in St Albans.

We then moved venue to a private boys' school, but they weren't always reliable in opening the venue up.... Undeterred, we packed our bags and moved on to Astley Cooper School in Hemel Hempstead for many happy years, as members of the British Woodcarvers Association, and renamed ourselves ‘BWA – Herts Region’. Sadly, the school stopped offering their venue at weekends.

After much searching our current school – ‘Marlborough Science Academy’ in St Albans - came up trumps, and things have been working really well since then.

Sadly, in 2020 (Covid....), the British Woodcarvers Association folded, so we rebranded ourselves again, and are happily here today as the ‘Hertfordshire Woodcarvers’.

Over recent years quite a few new members have joined us; interestingly, mostly women. We come in all ages and skill levels, from absolute beginners to award-winners. Don't be shy if you've never tried wood carving, as you'll be given what you need to get going, and our experienced members are more than happy to provide advice and guidance.

Above: taster sessions, using soap bars (!), proved very popular at the Living Crafts Fair held at Hatfield House (2023).
